Snap, the parent company of Snapchat, has announced the latest and most advanced version of its wearable Spectacles, the SPS 2021. The latest generation of glasses come with augmented reality capabilities.
Snap SPS 2021 Spectacles features
The glasses feature Dual 3D waveguide displays along with a 26.3-degree field-of-view overlay. Snap Spatial Engine is the software behind the SPS 2021 – it deploys several tracking methods and six degrees of freedom to create realistic lens overlays with immersive experiences with the real world. The creators can transfer their Lenses designed in Lens Studio on a desktop wirelessly to the new Spectacles for rapid testing.
Qualcomm Snapdragon XR1 chipset, which was designed specifically for AR devices, is used here. The wearable comes with a built-in touchpad, two stereo speakers, and four microphones. To make the resultant effects as realistic as possible, front-facing cameras are deployed to map the outside world. The SPS 2021 weigh 134g and offer a mere 30-minute battery backup.
Pricing and availability
The new Spectacles are not for sale. Not yet at least. They are made especially for creators who are working with the Snapchat Lenses platform to create AR-based overlay lenses. The creators can express their interest if they want to acquire a unit of the new glasses.
As reported by The Verge, Snap has also acquired WaveOptics, which made projectors and waveguides for augmented reality glasses.
