Chinese smartphone companies like Xiaomi, Vivo, Oppo, Huawei, and Gionee, etc have gained a considerable market share in India. In fact, in 2016 these brands accounted for more than 50% of New devices in India, a first of its kind.

According to Counterpoint Research, Indian brands dropped below 20 percent market share of shipments in November. This was a huge deviation considering Indian brands accounted for 40 percent market share in early 2016.

The biggest gainers were Vivo and Gionee, literally ruled the $250-450 segment which saw a growth of staggering 150%. One of the major reason behind this growth is their focus on offline sales and support. Xiaomi in October said it sold more than 1 million smartphones in India in the first 18 days of the month. Although Xiaomi, which focuses mainly on online sales, also launched an offline-only smartphone which has been very well received by consumers.

Gionee today also announced that it has clocked 1.20 crore consumers in India. The company grew twice as much as the last year and has ambitious targets for this year as well. Gionee will also be re-enforcing its offline channel by establishing 500 brand stores in India along with doubling their strength of retail representatives to 20,000.

The company also announced the Captain of the Indian Cricket Team Virat Kohli as their new brand ambassador. Gionee had roped in actor Alia Bhatt as it’s brand ambassador a few months ago.

On the partnership, Arvind.R Vohra, Country CEO & MD, Gionee India said “ India is one of the fastest growing young economies in the world and Gionee takes immense pride in having India’s biggest youth icons Virat Kohli and Alia Bhatt as its brand endorsers. With the two of the most loved icons in India, our motto of Making Smiles is bound to create a new benchmark across billions of young hearts.”
